Growing up I was fortunate enough to receive books from British relatives. Some of my favorite were by Lucie Attwell (you may have noticed my reference to her in my side bar). 
I don’t have many books, and the ones I do have are pretty well worn.
But look at the pictures – how sweet! I love the colours and the images.
I have even taken one of her pictures and used it for some Bluework embroidery with a matching retro fabric.
My mother in law (Agnes), was kind enough to let me have a picture she had hanging in her kitchen (it is in mine now).
She also brought back an old Attwell postcard from one of her trips to England.
There are many great female illustrators - another I like is Jessie Willcox Smith. 
Whose your favorite? 
My favorite is probably Fern Bissel Peat. I used to collect tin litho tea sets, and she did some of the graphics for those. When I found out she also illustrated books, I started looking for those, too.

Tasha Tudor is my favorite. I can't believe I don't have any of her books. And that I never made a point to attend any book signings or attended any of her talks. She gave a talk at Conner Prairie Museum and I lived down the road in Indianapolis at the time! Someday I will do a set of embroideries from her drawings and make a quilt : ) Your Lucie Attwell bluework is darling.
ReplyDeleteI love these illustrations, and especially the bluework you did. I think my favorite is Garth Williams, who illustrated the Little House on the Prairie books that I love.
ReplyDeleteSweet post, Julie. I love looking at all the old illustrations - maybe sometime I will see if I can get some of the little Golden Books that the kids had when they were little. Sherry has them. There were so many of them - my mom almost always brought one along when she and dad came to see the kids. Dad brought gum! Back then the books were 25cents. Carol
ReplyDeleteI remember those books! Do you remember the one I have called "My Tall Book of Nursery Rhymes"? I think that one came from Gramma Ada. The first pic brought back a flood of memories, I remember reading those as well. Thanks for the flash back!
