She Flourished Her Pen!
Oh dear - I must be a dinousaur after all. I read this article yesterday - apparently our children and children's children are no longer required to be adept at cursive writing. I find that sad, understandable given technology today, but sad.
I love recieving letters - now admittedly some of the ones I get from elderly aunts and uncles require a decoder - but the fact that someone takes the time to sit down and "write" a letter to me is very special. To me it indicates a caring about the written word (I know I always think through every letter I write). I personally don't believe cursive writing will completely disappear. After all, I consider it an art form - and not one we are all necessarily good at. Still, what's next? If you watched the Emmy's last night you heard several times about technology and television (heh, if you can see it on You Tube why bother with a set?) Of course, I'm saying all of this while banging out this post on my keyboard!!! What do you think?

Sherry and I have talked about this at times. She works in the school system and she says the teachers have so much paperwork and other things to cram into their day there is no room for penmanship. I so remember doing the Palmer Method in my little one room school - the push and pulls and the endless circles. If I don't rush, I can still do cursive pretty much in that style. In spite of all our advancements, we have lost so many of the simple and enjoyable things in life. So many things to save time and still no one has any time for relaxation. Carol
ReplyDeleteI'm always sad to see an old skill go by the wayside, although it makes a lot more sense for kids to learn keyboarding skills than penmanship, I guess. Still - my 15-year-old, honors-class daughter had to sign a form last week, looked at me and said she didn't know how to "make" a signature!

ReplyDeleteI love my computer but I love, love, to receive a beautifully hand written note... I did a couple posts way back on this.... I love to write a letter or something very personal to someone and make it very special... It is a gift in it's own right... Thanks for stopping by my blog.... hope you come back...
